COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At its May meeting, El Pomar Foundation approved $160,000 in grants for 16 nonprofits and government agencies in the Northwest region — including a $25,000 grant to the City of Grand Junction for its Matchett Park Community Recreation Center. The funds, awarded through its longstanding grant making process, will support organizations in Garfield, Gilpin, Grand, Jackson, Mesa, Moffat, Rio Blanco and Routt counties.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Uncanny Valley Art Gallery brightened a slow Sunday on Main Street by hosting a mini market with live art demos and sales by gallery members—local visitors met the artists and heard how their work was made—and organizers plan to include more local artists in future events.  KJCT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fire crews made progress on Western Colorado wildfires with Turner Gulch, Wright Draw, Cottonwood Flat, Sowbelly, South Rim and Deer Creek showing containment from 30% to 66% based on updates from July 19th and 20th. The U.S. Forest Service has closed roads and issued evacuation warnings in Turner Gulch and South Rim—residents in evacuation zones are urged to contact the American Red Cross for assistance.  KJCT
  • Over the weekend, fire crews made progress on Western Colorado wildfires with Turner Gulch at 34%, Wright Draw at 51%, Cottonwood Flat at 35%, Sowbelly at 66%, South Rim at 31% and Deer Creek at 30% by late Sunday, July 20 — updates provided before evening. The U.S. Forest Service announced road closures and pre-evacuation orders, while residents in affected areas could call the American Red Cross for help.  KKCO 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Grand Valley Transit will start a new route in October and order three new compressed natural gas buses valued at $2.1 million to connect North Avenue with western Mesa County – the agency also offers free rides through Zero Fare for Better Air. It will open an $8.2 million maintenance facility at the city fleet yard to expand its space from three to eight bays and hire more mechanics.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
