ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Sunday, a fire on Piñon Mesa led to the closure of JS Road at 16 1/2 Road which has since re-opened as the 20-acre Enoch Fire on private land threatened nearby structures. Firefighters made progress containing the blaze while Governor Polis declared a disaster emergency for the Elk Fire — other major fires in the region remain a concern. Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
- ➤ Fire officials said that ground and air crews are battling the Leroux Fire near Hotchkiss after a lightning strike started it on August 3, and evacuations were ordered for residents living off 3100 Road north of the Oak Mesa Road intersection. By 5:30 p.m. on August 4, the fire had burned 700 acres — local agencies, volunteers, and federal resources are working to bring it under control. KJCT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Mesa County commissioners sent a joint letter on July 29 to Gov. Polis, Senate President Coleman and House Speaker McCluskie urging the state to fund or fix new rules that could cost local taxpayers nearly $10 million each year (including Rule 31, which would require $9 million upfront and $1 million annually). The commissioners say these unfunded mandates force the county to divert funds from essential services as local taxpayers pay the price. The Business Times
