Good morning, Grand Junction. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 6th of August.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Confluencial, a Grand Junction startup co-led by Colorado State University graduate Kyler Cheatham and Colorado Mesa University alum Avery Kane, is gaining global recognition for its AI tool River.AI, which helps enterprise clients make technology decisions. The founders say their business is grounded in local community values (a choice that surprised many global colleagues) and they believe Grand Junction’s unique culture fuels innovation (despite the area not being known as a tech hub).  WesternSlopeNow.com

CRIME NEWS

  • Patrick Egan pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges of second-degree assault by strangulation & bias-motivated crimes after allegedly choking a KKCO reporter who was followed from Delta to the station & his trial is set for January 12th-16th.  WesternSlopeNow.com
  • Deputies arrested Shawn Marx and Keri Merrill after locating a reportedly stolen camper at Mud Springs Campground in Glade Park on August 5, charging them with theft valued between $20,000 and $100,000 while Marx also faced a failure-to-register charge and Merrill a failure to appear—both were released on personal recognizance bonds and are set to return in court on August 12.  WesternSlopeNow.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Colorado officials said that the state may face a $1.2 billion budget deficit due to corporate tax cuts and a new federal law after closing a previous $1 billion gap. The governor’s office and lawmakers said they might call a special session to address the funding shortfall—efforts that may lead to cuts in services.  WesternSlopeNow.com
  • Mesa County Veterans Services will host a Veterans Aging & Survivor Benefits Symposium on Sept. 22 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Mesa County Workforce Center. The event will help veterans, caregivers and families learn about survivor benefits, pensions and military retirement — with local experts leading key discussions.  Mesa County
  • On August 5, Mesa County commissioners agreed to file a lawsuit against the governor and attorney general over Senate Bill 276 — a law they say is too vague and risks punishing officers for following their training. They claim the unclear law led to reduced cooperation with federal agencies and loss of grant funding, and the lawsuit will be filed within 24 to 36 hours with a 21-day response period.  KJCT
  • Mesa County Commissioners voted on Aug. 5 to authorize a federal lawsuit against Gov. Jared Polis and Attorney General Phil Weiser to protect county employees' constitutional rights and allocate public funds for legal representation. The lawsuit will seek clarity on local law enforcement roles under Senate Bill 25-276 and safeguard the county's financial interests.  Mesa County
  • Mesa County commissioners approved filing a lawsuit against Attorney General Phil Weiser and Gov. Jared Polis, alleging the new law—effective June 1—that stops sharing personal data with ICE is unconstitutional after a deputy shared a 19-year-old student's information during a June 5 traffic stop. County officials say the action defends officers who were disciplined while Weiser filed his own suit against the deputy on July 22.  WesternSlopeNow.com

  • Colorado ranks 15th in the nation for foodborne illnesses with 52.1 cases per 100,000 people and about 3,023 annual cases—E. coli STEC is the leading pathogen—and a national study shows that nearly one-third of cases occur during summer when outdoor cooking is common.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
