- ➤ Downtown Cat Café opened today at 1649 Main St. offering adoptable cats, live music and local art from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Grand Valley Power elected Kyle Coltrinari, Gary De Young, and Andrew Golike as board directors to serve three-year terms starting Aug. 20—ballots were tabulated under committee supervision. - ➤ Friday morning, workers and community leaders watched as the final steel beam was hoisted and attached to Grand Junction’s future recreation center—marking a topping out ceremony that celebrates years of community effort and sets the stage for Colorado’s tallest indoor water slide along with five pools, a lazy river and other amenities to be unveiled with a public ribbon cutting next year. - ➤ Colorado State Patrol Chief Matthew C. Packard said fatal crashes have risen in the past two months even as overall numbers fell earlier this year. He said strict enforcement will take place and urged drivers to hold each other accountable after three people died in two separate crashes on U.S. Highway 550—prompting a call for increased road safety. - ➤ Three crashes on U.S. Highway 550 this week resulted in three deaths and two rescues—Tuesday’s accident off Red Mountain Pass killed two and injured one, Wednesday’s head-on collision claimed a Montrose man’s life, and Thursday’s incident saw one driver survive a 200-foot fall with minor injuries. - ➤ Monica Esposito, a Grand Junction painter and NICU nurse, was chosen as the first Community Artist in Park at Colorado National Monument and will host painting events over the next several months. - ➤ Colorado firefighters have been battling multiple wildfires as the Turner Gulch Fire burns over 26,441 acres at 49% containment near Gateway, the Leroux Fire has reached 195 acres at 74% containment near Hotchkiss, and the Twelve Fire near Dinosaur burned over 4,287 acres at 20% containment with road closures (Oak Mesa Road and Deer Lodge Road) while 3100 Road remains open (for the public). In Utah, the Deer Creek Fire has grown to 17,724 acres at 97% containment, the Elkhorn Fire near Thimble has expanded over 300 acres at 93% containment, and the Stoner Mesa Fire is still uncontained.
