COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On August 9, the Fruita Police Department hosted its third annual Cops — N’ Cars show to raise funds for the Center for Children, with support from Western Slope Auto — Alpine Bank. Proceeds from car entries and T-shirt sales went directly to the child advocacy center that works to keep local children safe.  KJCT

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A wildfire near Meeker grew to nearly 90,000 acres—increasing evacuations in Garfield County that included moving 179 prisoners from a state prison in Rifle—while over 1,200 firefighters worked to contain the fires. A motor vehicle fire on 32 Road burned two modular buildings—and damaged three more structures, prompting local authorities to respond with no injuries reported.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

CULTURE NEWS

  • On August 9, the Robert Leroy Parker chapter 1889 for E Clampus Vitus unveiled a new plaque at Dos Rios Park that explains how Grand Junction got its name and honors the late Gary Parrott—an active member involved in veterans' funerals. His wife, Lori Parrott, attended the ceremony along with about 40 community members.  KJCT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • An airbase near the Colorado Springs airport has supported fire crews on Colorado’s western slope by fueling airtankers that dropped 227,000 gallons of fire retardant on active fires like the Lee Fire. The base, built in 2022, is designed for VLAT operations—specialized tankers that can load two at once and cover a 400-mile radius to help protect lives and property.  KKCO 11
  • The Rio Blanco County Sheriff’s Office ordered a mandatory evacuation due to the Lee Fire—Zone 63 is in GO Status and Zone 66 is in READY—Green status as of early Saturday morning, and residents in other areas may face further evacuation orders.  KJCT

  • Boulder DA candidate Michael Dougherty held his Lunch and Learn event at Mesa County Central Library on Wednesday+he discussed immigration rights, ICE practices and private prisons while promising that local representation in the Attorney General’s office would support Mesa County’s public safety and water resource needs.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
