BUSINESS NEWS

  • Spirit Halloween announced its Grand Junction store will open this August at the former Joann Fabrics on U.S. Highway 6 as part of 30 Colorado pop-up stores planned for the fall — the chain will soon hire 50,000 temporary workers across more than 1,500 locations statewide.  KJCT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On August 10, the Turner Gulch Fire burned 28,403 acres at 49% containment while about 731 personnel worked to control the blaze — cooler temperatures and cloud cover slowed its progress. Officials said some air attack crews may be redirected to assist with the Lee Fire as wildfire challenges continue.  KKCO 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rifle Correctional Center evacuated 179 inmates—using its emergency plan to move them to secure facilities as the Lee Fire spreads in Rio Blanco County. No injuries were reported while staff coordinated the safe transfer of residents.  KKCO 11

HEALTH NEWS

  • Officials found West Nile virus in Garfield County mosquito samples taken last week near Parachute—Battlement Mesa, Silt, and Rifle. Health experts advise residents to drain standing water—limit outdoor activity during dusk and dawn, use repellents, and wear long sleeves to reduce the risk of infection.  KKCO 11
