- ➤ On Monday, Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Response Team 3 plus other agencies held a meeting in Rifle to update those affected by the Lee Fire, Colorado’s fifth largest fire, with nearly 700 firefighters working to suppress it. Incident meteorologist Rose Schoenfeld reported a 40 to 50% chance of rain this weekend while public lands from the Colorado River Valley to Rifle Mountain Park were closed for safety. - ➤ At 9:30 p.m. Monday night, a driver crashed into Holman House Furniture on Highway 6 and 25 Road, leaving the store with structural, roof, and concrete damage estimated at over $200,000—three people were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries while witnesses said alcohol may have been a factor. - ➤ Seven individuals were indicted Tuesday on 51 counts for a theft and forgery ring that stole 44 vehicles valued at over $870,000 from residents in Mesa, Garfield, and parts of Utah—Grand Junction Police Detective Sgt. - ➤ Colorado Mesa University Tech offers a Wildland Fire Management Program that trains students to fight wildfires with hands-on classes meeting National Wildfire Coordinating Group standards. - ➤ Firefighters continue battling the Lee Fire today near Meeker as strong winds and dry conditions add to the challenge; the wildfire now covers 116,859 acres with 6% containment while the Elk Fire stands at 14,549 acres with 30% containment. - ➤ Mesa County Commissioners have filed a federal lawsuit against Gov. Jared Polis and Attorney General Phil Weiser to challenge vague rules in Article 74 of the Colorado Revised Statutes that they say put local police at risk—Sheriff Todd Rowell, Undersheriff Matt King and Capt. Curtis Bramer are named as plaintiffs with public funds approved to support the case. The Business Times
- ➤ The Grand Junction Fire Department is deploying wildland crews to fight multiple fires— a three-person team to the Turner Gulch fire, a four-person crew to California’s Plumas National Forest until the 19th, and a team leader to the Lee fire near Meeker until the 25th.
