CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A 47-year-old Grand Junction man, Jeremy Kaufmann, was charged with vehicular homicide and reckless driving after colliding head-on with Peggy Chesney’s vehicle at the intersection of Patterson Road and 25 Road in February, which killed Chesney on March 7 and led to Kaufmann hitting a traffic light pole—he is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 22. - ➤ Grand Junction police arrested 30-year-old Maxim May after he jumped from rooftop to rooftop near Orchard Avenue and North Eighth Street on Thursday morning—officers used less lethal options to stop him and charged him with trespassing, criminal mischief, resisting arrest and obstruction while investigating possible drug involvement. - ➤ The Colorado Department of Transportation said July was the deadliest month for impaired driving with 26 fatalities—a 37% increase from spring. Today, CDOT, Colorado State Patrol and 56 local agencies will enforce DUI laws until September 3 to help lower roadway deaths. KJCT

- ➤ Today, Mesa County put Stage 2 Fire Restrictions in effect because dry conditions and warm weather have raised fire danger to high levels—residents are now banned from using open flames like tiki torches, charcoal grills, and wood fire pits. Fire officials urge everyone to follow safety rules including using spark arrestors on outdoor equipment and properly disposing of cigarette butts to prevent wildfires. KJCT
- ➤ Today, Mesa County put Stage 2 fire restrictions in place because warm, dry weather has raised wildfire risks—Public Information Officer Dirk Clingman said wooden or charcoal fire pits and grills are banned while gas powered and liquid fueled devices must have their flame turned off. - ➤ Mesa County will enforce stage two fire restrictions at midnight today — these measures protect communities from wildfire risk— while restrictions for the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests began at midnight on Thursday and officials will monitor conditions for further action. - ➤ Gov. Jared Polis visited Grand Junction at the Turner Gulch Fire Command Center and signed an executive order on Thursday declaring a disaster emergency due to critical fire weather—his order allows the National Guard to support fire suppression efforts and allocates $2.5 million to the Wildfire Emergency Response Fund.
