ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A small fire started near Holloway and 16 Road in Glade Park on Wednesday, and Mesa County's Wildland Fire Team with the Glade Park Fire Department contained it to a few acres while deputies and rangers managed traffic — the cause remains under investigation and stage 2 fire restrictions are in place. - ➤ A 47-year-old man — David Leroy Carver Jr. — disrupted a Breeze Airways flight that made an unscheduled landing in Grand Junction by breaking free of restraints twice, threatening a passenger with chewing tobacco, and injuring a flight attendant with his belt, and he now faces federal charges. - ➤ David Leroy Carver Jr., 47 — accused of making sexual comments, racial slurs and threatening a flight attendant as he diverted a Breeze Airways flight to Grand Junction, injured a crew member during the struggle and later appeared in court on Thursday. WesternSlopeNow.com
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Fire crews are battling multiple wildfires as the Lee Fire burned 127,107 acres and is 3% contained, the Elk Fire burned 14,518 acres and is 75% contained, the Turner Gulch Fire burned 31,695 acres with 53% containment, and the Stoner Mesa Fire burned 7,390 acres without any containment. The Leroux Fire is 90% contained after 195 acres burned and the Crosho Fire in Rio Blanco County has burned over 1,700 acres—stage 2 restrictions now cover Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests from August 14 until December 31. - ➤ Gov. Jared Polis visited the Western Slope on Thursday. He stopped at Talbott farms to pick peaches and talk with local groups—then he went to the Turner Gulch fire command center to learn about wildfire response and to the Palisade Insectary where he declared Palisade Insectary Day before flying back to the Front Range. - ➤ Mesa County Human Services was recognized by the Colorado Department of Human Services for processing 95% of SNAP applications on time—showing its commitment to quickly assisting families in need. Mesa County
- ➤ City projects on Horizon Dr.—including roundabout construction that will close G Rd. between Horizon Dr. and 27 1/2 Ct. and the Ouray Ave water project with detours on 7th to 15th Streets—will change traffic patterns through October. CDOT will narrow lanes on I-70 Business Loop and limit South Camp Rd. to one lane starting Wed. Aug. 20, so drivers will face delays. City of Grand Junction

- ➤ Mesa County Public Health’s WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program earned the Premiere Award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for its support of breastfeeding families. The program provides personalized guidance to Mesa County mothers—72% of participants in 2023 breastfed at six weeks postpartum. Mesa County
- ➤ A confirmed case of measles was found in an unvaccinated adult in Mesa County who had no known connection to other cases or travel, raising concerns of local spread in Grand Junction. Health officials from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment listed several exposure sites—Landmark Baptist Church and School, Chick-fil-A, Burger King, and the Community Hospital Emergency Department—where people should watch for symptoms for 21 days after possible contact. - ➤ CDPHE reported that four Mesa County locations – Landmark Baptist Church and School, Chick-fil-A, Burger King, and the Community Hospital Emergency Department – were possibly exposed to measles from Aug. 7 through Aug. 14; symptoms may appear between Aug. 28 and Sept. 4.
