  • Next Steps Neurodiversity hosted its second annual expo at the Grand Junction Convention Center on August 16, focusing on support for different ways of thinking. The event featured speakers, advocacy groups, job support and resource booths with about 600 online registrants, and organizers hope it grows next year.  KJCT

CULTURE NEWS

  • At the Palisade Peach Festival on Aug 16, more than 150 photos from the Faces of the Harvest exhibit highlighted local migrant workers who grow the peaches and wine. La Plaza and the Palisade Chamber of Commerce launched the project to empower workers and educate residents about their challenges and contributions—reviving a tradition that began in 1887.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Northern Rockies Incident Team II has worked since early August on the Turner Gulch fire where limited access and tough outflow weather have challenged crews yet allowed them to gradually gain containment; the crew will go home today from their 14 day shift & have a three day break before starting a new assignment.  KKCO 11
  • An overnight rainstorm slowed the spread of the Elk and Lee fires and enabled firefighters to reinforce containment lines and clear hazards along Colorado Highway 13, which reopened Saturday at 11:50 a.m. with a 50 mph speed limit for emergency crews. The Lee Fire burned 133,954 acres and was 31% contained while the Elk Fire burned 14,518 acres and was 93% contained—officials also downgraded several evacuation zones.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fire crews from the Northern Rockies Incident Team II have been fighting the Turner Gulch fire since early August in tough terrain and unpredictable weather as they work to contain the blaze. The team will go home today and transfer command to Northern Rockies Team III, with members on a two week shift and scheduled for at least three days off — marking steady progress on containment.  KJCT

  • On August 16, Mesa County Public Health said it was investigating a potential second measles case in Mesa County—officials began contact tracing even though the source of exposure was still unknown.  KKCO 11

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Grand Garages, a garage condo facility, will open next year in Grand Junction. The 54,000-square-foot project at 2471 Industrial Blvd. will offer 50 units from 700 to 1,900 square feet with pre-construction prices ranging from $206,000 to over $500,000 + ground will break in November for a 10-month build as early sales have already received strong community interest.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
