- ➤ A motorcyclist suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital after a pickup truck—allegedly turning east on Four Corners Drive while traveling southbound on 29 Road—struck the motorcycle just before 8 p.m. on Aug 20th, and police closed the road while they investigated the crash. - ➤ The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America awarded $46,000 in college scholarships to students affected by Alzheimer’s disease in a national contest—students submitted essays or videos to share their stories. KJCT
- ➤ Mark C. Perna, a nationally acclaimed generational expert, will speak at 5 p.m. on Aug. 25 at Grand Junction High School Auditorium—his keynote 'The Power of Purpose' is organized by the Business Incubator Center with Mesa County School District 51, D51 Foundation and Colorado Mesa University, and $10 tickets benefit the D51 Foundation. - ➤ The Derby Fire started on August 16 when lightning struck a steep cliff and spread on August 17 as burning material rolled down the slope. On August 20, the Northern Rockies Complex Incident Management Team 3 took command—crews worked to protect homes and evacuate Sweetwater as overnight winds further fueled the blaze. KKCO 11

- ➤ Mesa County has imposed a temporary hiring freeze effective August 12 due to uncertainties in federal and state funding — officials will review exceptions on a case-by-case basis. Deputy County Administrator Matt Lewis said the measure is designed to protect current employees and essential services. KJCT
- ➤ A new bill by Rep. Matt Martinez would stop the gray wolf reintroduction program by moving $264,000 from it—costing $3.4 million last year—to fund a health insurance effort. Supporters say the measure is needed during a budget crunch while critics worry it voids a voter decision from 2020, and the bill will be introduced in the special session starting Thursday. - ➤ The Bureau of Land Management is constructing a new multi-use aviation operations base at Grand Junction Regional Airport using a $9 million grant from the Great American Outdoors Act to modernize outdated facilities for firefighting and support teams.
