COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Grand Junction and the Skateboard Alliance will host the first Wild West Skate Fest on Saturday, September 13, 2025, where skateboarders, families and local businesses join competitions, live art, music and food trucks. Pre-registration closes at 5 p.m. on September 11 and on-site registration begins at 11 a.m. — the first competition runs at noon.  City of Grand Junction

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Colorado Mesa University Tech has seen record growth as overall enrollment rose 35% last year and 15% this year—an overall 50% increase in two years, with the welding program alone growing 40% since last year. The school attracts students with lower tuition and experienced teachers from the industry.  WesternSlopeNow.com
  • Grand Junction High School Band Parents are hosting a cornhole tournament at Cornhole Ect today—registration starts at 2 p.m. and the tournament begins at 3 p.m., with a silent auction to raise funds for music instruments that many students are partly paying for.  KJCT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fire crews improved containment on several wildfires burning across Colorado. Derby burned 3,569 acres and remained uncontained — Stoner Mesa burned 9,913 acres at 27% containment, Lee burned 137,755 acres at 76% containment, Crosho burned 2,072 acres at 57% containment and Turner Gulch burned 31,699 acres at 88% containment.  KKCO 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Grand Junction Mayor Cody Kennedy denied micromanaging staff during the Fourth and Fifth streets project and said the council's four to three vote to reverse the bike lane and one lane setup was driven by political factors—reflecting input from business owners and the community.   • On August 21, Colorado lawmakers approved moving $264,268 from gray wolf reintroduction funds—redirecting the money to the Health Insurance Affordability Enterprise—as part of efforts to ease budget pressures and improve healthcare.  KJCT

HEALTH NEWS

  • With confirmed measles cases in Mesa County, local doctors and health officials urge residents to get the MMR vaccine to protect against measles, mumps, and rubella. They advise unvaccinated individuals to avoid crowded places and check their vaccine records to cut infection risks—measles spreads easily by cough and sneeze.  KKCO 11
  • Community Hospital received its Level III trauma center recertification after the Colorado Department of Health checked its staff readiness, clinical care, and standards. The three-year process confirms the hospital is ready to support the community during emergencies—an important step for local safety.  KJCT
