EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Colorado Department of Education released state test scores for the 2024-2025 school year on Thursday, and Mesa County Valley School District 51 said its elementary students now score above state averages in five areas—showing gains in reading and math. The district reported that middle and high school students are also making progress with improved test scores and a record 83% graduation rate, and it will continue to invest in early literacy through a new five-year plan. - ➤ The Grand Junction City Council approved three measures on Wednesday to move the Salt Flats affordable housing project forward—leasing 4.4 acres and letting City Manager Mike Bennett sign letters of intent with Brikwell LLC for a 144-unit mixed-income development. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Starting Monday, DACA recipients known as Dreamers must cancel their Connect for Health Colorado insurance or risk owing back money, and if they do not cancel by Aug. 25 they may owe between $375 and $3,250—help is available through Colorado Connect for alternative coverage. - ➤ The Department of Veterans Affairs Grand Junction Medical Center was awarded funds from the Non-Recurring Maintenance Program for upgrades such as replacing sewer mains, renovating urgent care and the dental clinic, and boosting facility security — a spokesperson declined to provide exact amounts or dates.
