  • On August 24, a flock of plastic flamingos landed at Community Hospital as part of the Junior Order Eagles’ fundraiser that benefits Charisma Chorus—Childhood Diabetes Prevention and Eagles Aerie 595. The fundraiser will end on August 28 when the group leaves for a state eagles camping trip.  KKCO 11

  • Networks Unlimited, a Grand Junction information technology provider, announced its expansion into Wyoming through its acquisition of 307 Tech Pros — a managed services company in Casper.   • Christina Tuttle left her office job to launch Bravo Food Truck after a summer of working on trucks — her first event at the Fruita Fall Festival sparked her passion. She now sells food at events like the Grand Junction Air Show — she said running a food truck is hard work and risky after breaking her leg last year while unhooking equipment, but she loves to bring people together.  WesternSlopeNow.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fire officials reported that lightning sparked 10 wildfires in the Grand Junction area on August 23 — most fires were held to less than ¼ acre with swift initial attack — and the Baxter Fire burned 5.5 acres 15 miles northwest of Mack.  KKCO 11
  • Six weeks into the Turner Gulch fire, crews have reached 79% containment by bulldozing fuel breaks and dropping water to slow the nearly 32,000-acre blaze in the Uncompahgre National Forest. Local officials and residents remain wary of the area’s radioactive past—tests of soil and air near abandoned uranium mines along Niche Road will continue.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

  • Today, a federal water conservation pilot program that pays users to cut back on water use remains stalled in the House as a dry summer increases pressure in the Colorado River Basin. Rep.
