  • Food Bank of the Rockies said nearly 500,000 lbs of food has been collected from 35 local farmers and ranchers—half bought and half donated—to feed people on the Western Slope and uses the only dehydrator in the Feeding America network to turn damaged produce into fruit chips for backpack programs.  KKCO 11
  • On Tuesday, the Grand Junction Lions Club awarded $32,000 in grant funding to five local organizations at Warehouse 25sixtyfive as part of its 2025 Grant Recipient Season—proceeds from the 96th Annual Raffle funded the event and the funds will support local projects.  WesternSlopeNow.com

  • A loud explosion rang through the Grand Valley when the Grand Junction Police bomb squad detonated unstable 50-year-old dynamite at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday on the 2500 block of Kenneth Court after a family found it Tuesday — with utilities shut off, residents alerted, and no injuries reported.  WesternSlopeNow.com

  • On August 26, the Bomb Squad detonated 50-year-old dynamite at a home on Kenneth Court after a family uncovered the unstable explosives—neighbors received a 911 alert and no one was injured.  KJCT
  • Police are searching for a white male with dark hair and a goatee after he allegedly stole four Louis Vuitton handbags from Dillard’s at Mesa Mall on July 30 at 7:42 p.m.—security cameras captured him cutting the cable securing the bags and leaving the store, causing over $5,700 in losses.  WesternSlopeNow.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Caprock Academy High School in Grand Junction was named the top local high school and ranked 50th statewide by U.S. News & World Report for the 2025-26 school year. Dean Howard Butcher said the ranking—which is based on factors like college readiness and graduation rates—reflects the dedicated work of staff, students, community and parents, marking the sixth year the school has earned this honor.  KKCO 11

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Ute Water Conservancy District is preparing for an exceptional drought in Mesa County as it monitors water usage for 90,000 customers. The agency said the dual water system helps protect water supplies but noted that dry soils and increased wildfires may affect crops and runoff next year — prompting careful resource management.  WesternSlopeNow.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mesa County Public Health released the annual Suicide Report that shows 50 residents die by suicide each year at a rate of 31.0 per 100,000 and that more than half of these deaths involve a firearm—information that underscores ongoing prevention efforts.
