- ➤ Grand Junction held an informational meeting on August 28 with Brikwell and city officials to review the Salt Flats affordable housing project—officials explained the project will add over 324 housing units with 70% reserved for affordable living and that groundbreaking may begin in 2026. KJCT
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Crime Stoppers of Mesa County is looking for a man who allegedly stole four Louis Vuitton handbags from Mesa Mall Dillard's on July 30—he is described as a white male with dark hair, a goatee, and wearing a red Mitchell & Ness jersey, red shorts, and a red baseball cap. KJCT
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Mesa County Valley School District 51 is enhancing security in its schools to protect students and staff by adding a new dispatch center for direct calls to security officers. The district said a weapons detection system called ZeroEyes will be installed within a month to help spot threats before they reach school buildings. KKCO 11
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Commissioner Daniel said Mesa County is in its third year fighting the destructive Japanese beetle and has treated 1,500 parcels to protect local agriculture—residents outside the hot zone are urged to treat or dry their lawns to help stop the pest's spread. Mesa County
- ➤ Today the South Rim Road at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park reopens for visitors after its closure due to the South Rim Fire that began on July 10. Some areas, including the campgrounds and trails, remain closed for safety — rangers advise visitors to stay on the developed overlooks. KKCO 11
- ➤ Mosquitos in Grand Junction tested positive for West Nile Virus after the state lab confirmed the result. The Grand River Mosquito Control District will test additional areas such as Clifton, Fruita, and Palisade while treating standing water with larvicides and increasing fogging operations—an effort aimed at reducing the number of adult mosquitos. - ➤ On August 29, visitors returned to the South Rim Road of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park after it was closed due to a fire that began on July 10. The park is open 24 hours but warns visitors to avoid areas such as the East Portal Road and campground for safety. KJCT

- ➤ PrimeHealth+ opened its new 27,000 square foot clinic in Grand Junction Wednesday, raising patient capacity from 17,000 to 20,000; the facility now offers medical, dental, and behavioral health services and features the organization’s first drive thru pharmacy for easier access.
