COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, Warehouse 25 Sixty-Five is hosting the 10th annual Local Jam as local bands play live music while food, drinks, and ticket sales support suicide prevention charities through the Western Colorado Community Fund. Organizer Greg Hartman said almost all proceeds go to the fund and he expects the event to grow—bringing more support to suicide prevention.  KJCT
  • Families from Mesa County will attend a free foster and kinship resource fair on Sept.6 at Orchard Mesa Lions Club Park — the event is hosted by the Mesa County Department of Human Services with partners and will offer games, food trucks and prize drawings to help explore adoption and care options.  Mesa County

CULTURE NEWS

  • Over a century ago, prospectors on the Colorado plateau dug for carnotite, a uranium-heavy mineral later used in the Hiroshima bomb that sparked a mining boom and helped towns like Uravan flourish. Radioactive contamination forced closures in the 1980s—a town reunion was held in late August—offering a lasting reminder of Colorado’s atomic legacy.  KJCT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials from CDOT expect I-70 traffic from Denver to Grand Junction to rise to about 46,000 to 47,000 cars this Labor Day weekend with delays likely on mountain corridors and the Front Range. CDOT has suspended construction until Tuesday and advises drivers to plan ahead by carrying supplies — such as food, water, and blankets — in case of emergencies.  KJCT
  • Mesa County Public Health has delayed the fall burn season for Grand Junction and Mesa County residents due to unsafe weather and fire restrictions + active wildfires in western Colorado, and updates will be posted online when burning is allowed, though permit applications will start on September 1.  Mesa County
  • State legislators passed bill HB25B-1005 that removes the longstanding 4% sales tax vendor fee to help fill an $800 million budget shortfall—the change may force small business owners who depended on the fee for over 40 years to raise their prices.  WesternSlopeNow.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Delta Health will temporarily close its labor and delivery unit on September 18 due to fewer births and a shortage of providers. Hospital worker Silvia Reed said the decision was made without talking to the doctors who were ready to help — staff not trained for deliveries now worry about the impact on patient care.  KJCT
  • Vitalant partnered with Primary Care Partners on Friday for a Labor Day weekend blood drive in Grand Junction—donors received a $20 gift card and T-shirt with a special code. The drive is part of a national campaign and will offer a free hemoglobin A1C test with each blood donation in September, while Gov.
