Good morning, Grand Junction. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 31st of August.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • On August 30, Trail Life Brewing celebrated three years and Gear Junction marked nine years along Main Street. The partners said their joint milestone strengthened downtown energy—boosting local business growth.  KKCO 11

CRIME NEWS

  • A plaque installed Aug. 9 along the Colorado River by the Ancient and Honorable Order of E Clampus Vitus suggests that bandits from the 1889 Telluride bank robbery, including Butch Cassidy, may have passed through the Grand Valley—though no definitive proof confirms the route.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Researcher Chloe Beaupré used trail cameras in the Upper Gunnison Basin in late 2020 to study how busy trails affect local wildlife; her study showed that elk avoided trails with many visitors while deer were more common near these trails (elk activity dropped within 655 meters) and she recommends rethinking trail design to limit human impact on elk habitat. This work helps inform how to balance recreation with wildlife needs.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Judge Jennilynn Lawrence dismissed a lawsuit without prejudice against former Mesa County Deputy Alexander Zwinck, who resigned on Aug20 after Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser said he broke the law by sharing immigration details in a Signal chat that led to Caroline Dias Goncalves' arrest in Fruita. The judge noted the state may re-file the case if Zwinck takes another state or local job—since the law only applies to current employees.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment released five measles exposure sites in Mesa County from Aug. 22 to Aug. 27, including locations in Fruita + Grand Junction. Mesa County Public Health reported 7 cases in Mesa County and 27 statewide, and residents who visited these sites and develop symptoms are urged to contact a medical provider.  KJCT
