🚨 Crime
On August 31 at around 1 a.m., four individuals broke into unlocked cars near Ol Sun Drive as captured by footage on a Ring Camera app—police urged residents to lock their vehicles, park in well-lit areas, and secure valuables.
A 43-year-old man named Melvin Johnson threatened his roommate with a knife and barricaded himself inside a motel room around 1:25 p.m. Sunday at Columbine Motel in Grand Junction—officers arrested him after he refused to cooperate, and no injuries were reported.
🎓 Education
Mandy Budd from District 51 Maintenance — known for her work on new security systems — received the August Golden Apple Award for her extra support at county schools.
Her work helped keep school buildings safe and ready for every day.
🌲 Environment
Black Mountain Waste has been awarded a $60,000 grant from Governor Jared Polis and Colorado Parks and Wildlife through the 2025 Human-Bear Conflict Reduction initiative to reduce trash buildup that attracts bears—co-owners Russell and Shalana Battles say the funds will cut the weekly disturbance of up to 400 trash cans.
Low streamflows on the Western Slope have dropped to 10% of normal in some areas, so managers ordered fishing and float closures to protect endangered fish and river users.
The Colorado Water Trust and others plan more water releases to boost flows — though recent rain may not end the long dry spell.

On Monday, community members gathered at the Historic Lowell School Building to protest corporate and billionaire influence by writing postcards urging Rep. Jeff Herd to oppose policies they opposed—organizers stressed the importance of labor unions in protecting worker rights.
Union representatives said they will keep fighting for better wages and working conditions.

Officer Eric Brunner, who suffered severe back pain after a car accident and relied on Denver care for years, has opened a new The Joint chiropractic clinic in Grand Junction to bring affordable relief to local residents.
The clinic charges less than $30 per visit—and does not accept insurance, offering a needed option for those without nearby back care.
Mesa County Public Health and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment announced new measles exposure locations after two confirmed cases in Mesa County—exposures include sites at Trailblazer Pizza in Fruita and Community Hospital in Grand Junction with symptoms possibly developing through Sept. 17. The agencies urge everyone to get the MMR vaccine because measles is very contagious.
