COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On September 7, Lincoln Park Moyer Pool hosted a final dog swim event before closing, allowing dogs of all sizes to splash and play while owners cheered from the sidelines, and the event hosted by the City of Grand Junction benefited the Billy Crawford Memorial Scholarship Fund.  KKCO 11
  • Mesa County is asking residents to volunteer for commissioner-appointed boards and commissions that shape local policies and projects — roles include technical groups like the Building Code Board and community teams such as the Clifton Community Center Advisory Board. Applications can be submitted online at the Mesa County volunteer page or by contacting the Commissioners’ office.  Mesa County

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • In 2024, Colorado experienced its deadliest year for motorcyclists when 165 riders died with 33 in September—officials report a 57% rise in fatalities since 2015 and stress the need for safer riding and driving habits. CDOT and the State Patrol urge all road users to follow safety measures to prevent more tragedies.  KJCT

CRIME NEWS

  • A 52-year-old man who barricaded himself in a house after threatening a shooting during a January SWAT standoff appeared in court yesterday after pleading guilty to eight charges—including menacing, retaliation and obstruction—and he will be sentenced on October 28 at 11:30 a.m.  KJCT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will host an open house for the Grand Junction Colorado Temple from September 11 through September 27, excluding Sundays, where the community can enjoy free guided tours. The temple was built over three years, stands 118 feet, 8 inches tall and features western design motifs — visitors must book tours online.  WesternSlopeNow.com

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A recent study ranked Grand Junction as 11th among small U.S. metros for affordable housing. In 2024 the city approved the construction of over 1,014 new housing units at an average cost of $148,650 each — highlighting its efforts to boost affordable living options.  KJCT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A rain maker is on track to arrive late Thursday—bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms through early Friday and raising flash flood risks in valleys and mountains. Forecasts show most valleys will receive less than a half inch of rainfall while some mountain areas could see up to 1 inch in localized spots.  KJCT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials have not finalized plans for Whitman Park, which closed in 2023 due to safety concerns and underwent public review in 2024 for a possible renovation. City council is set to pursue further community engagement and strategic planning, and funding is not included in the proposed 2026 budget — leaving its future uncertain.  WesternSlopeNow.com
  • Following Gov. Jared Polis's 20th Workforce Development Month declaration, the Mesa County Workforce Center at 512 29 1/2 Road will host free workshops for job seekers this September plus a fall job fair on Oct 2 from 1 to 4 p.m. The events will include resume building on Sept. 10 at 2 p.m., rapid resume reviews on Sept. 17 at 2 p.m., speed interviewing on Sept. 23 at 9 a.m., and Ask a Hiring Manager on Sept. 25 at 10 a.m.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
