  • CMU Tech held its annual Patriot Day ceremony on September 11th where community members and future first responders remembered the 24th anniversary of 9/11.   • Bin 707 Foodbar at 235 Fifth St. in Grand Junction was named one of The New York Times’ 50 best restaurants in America for its Southwestern and Mexican flavors, including sunchoke hush puppies and maitake mushroom pizza. CULTURE NEWS

  • Grand Junction invites artists to design a mural on a traffic signal box along Monument Road that reflects the local desert wildlife & geology. Proposals are due by midnight on September 21 and the artwork is expected to be completed by October 13.  WesternSlopeNow.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, the National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for Grand Junction after calm conditions this morning—heavy thunderstorms, gusty winds up to 35 mph, and possible hail are expected later today as rapid rain may quickly cause flooding and mud flows near burn scars while storm cells develop over Western Colorado.  KJCT
  • Colorado Parks and Wildlife said that sales of the $29 Keep Colorado Wild Pass generated $41 million—exceeding the $36 million target and funding park maintenance and outdoor educational programs.  KJCT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mesa County Commissioners, the Colorado River District and U.S. Rep. Jeff Hurd met last month to talk about urgent threats and chances for the Colorado River. The meeting focused on protecting Shoshone water rights — a key part of keeping our water safe and will be shared in Washington, D.C.  Mesa County
  • The Grand Junction Fire Department reflects on the impact of September 11, 2001 by maintaining a memorial at station three that honors 343 firefighters who died at the World Trade Center. Firefighters also take part in daily workouts—reminding them to stay fit and ready for any challenging call.  KKCO 11
  • Mesa County Public Works said culverts are sized based on expected rain but may not handle extreme storms when up to 3.5 inches of rain falls in a short time — debris also clogs the drainage, causing water back-up. The county plans future projects to improve drainage while residents benefit from a flood insurance discount through the National Flood Insurance Program.  KJCT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mesa County Public Health will hold a focus group on Tuesday, September 16th at 6:00 p.m.—at the Health and Human Services Building, 510 29 ½ Rd, Room 1060—to gather local adults’ views on why youth use tobacco and nicotine products and to discuss prevention strategies. The event follows findings from a recent health survey that showed high youth access to these products.  Mesa County
  • Delta County Public Health confirmed that two seniors tested positive for West Nile virus, one from the Delta area and one from Surface Creek. Officials urge local residents to repel mosquitoes using an EPA-registered insect repellent + remove standing water from homes and yards.  KJCT
