CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, Colorado Mountains hosts its 34th annual Winefest at Riverbend Park in Palisade — the event features 40 Colorado-owned wineries, meaderies, cideries and a sake producer along with free music, educational seminars, grape stomping and a silent disco.  KJCT
  • Grand Junction’s pumpkin carver Willy Tuz returns to the Food Network as he competes on Season 15 of Halloween Wars which premieres tomorrow—he joins Team Graveyard Shift with Cat Campbell and Kimberly Rivers in a contest for $25,000 while operating out of Colorado Fruit Designs at 545 Main St.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Colorado Free Application Days will take place October 7-9 at 32 public colleges and several private institutions—offering fee waivers as part of Colorado Applies Month to help low-income and first-generation students stay in the state.  KKCO 11
  • Students at Broadway Elementary earn a windmill marker and ice cream at lunch for completing three acts of kindness, such as helping classmates and cleaning river litter in Grand Junction. The Acts of Kindness fundraiser—aiming to reach a $25,000 goal for school expenses and a new playground—has already received donations from 44 states and will run until Monday.  WesternSlopeNow.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Colorado Parks and Wildlife warns residents to secure trash and scented items as bear activity increases near neighborhoods, trails, and campgrounds—bears eat nonstop to pack on pounds for winter when food is scarce. Wildlife officials advise keeping a safe distance and carrying bear spray if encounters occur.  KKCO 11
  • Residents in De Beque are facing flooding along T and 45 Road as water from the neglected Larkin Ditch overflows and beaver dams worsen stagnant pools that breed mosquitoes. Locals including Darien Marx and the Tanner family have raised concerns after health officials confirmed some mosquitoes tested positive for West Nile Virus while county and state agencies offered little guidance.  KJCT
  • Colorado Parks and Wildlife reported that adult zebra mussels were found in the Colorado River near Grand Junction—posing a risk to native fish because one female can release up to 1 million eggs. Officials declared nearby water bodies infested and said they will not treat the river to protect local species while urging anglers to clean, drain, and dry their gear.  WesternSlopeNow.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Several road projects starting Sept. 22 will affect traffic in Grand Junction. Drivers should expect delays from roundabout construction on Horizon Dr. and G Rd. with closures between Horizon Dr. and 27 1/2 Ct., detours on Ouray Ave., a one-day closure on 5th Street, and a Linden Ave. water project—along with CDOT’s one-lane adjustments on First Street and Ute & Pitkin.  City of Grand Junction
  • Grand Junction Public Works Director Trent Prall said the city is nearly finished restriping Fourth and Fifth streets back to a two-lane design after the summer pilot project changed them for cyclists—workers start at 4:30 a.m. and the last block will be done by middle of next week.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
  • Today during National Co-Responder Week, the Grand Junction Police Department and Mesa County Sheriff's Office honored teams that work with officers to help people in mental health crises—GJPD responded to 1,962 calls in 2024 and MCSO secured $301,000 in funding in April to support clinicians.  WesternSlopeNow.com

  • The VA Western Colorado Health Care System is acting this month to prevent veteran suicide by launching a new tool called The Living Lockbox — designed to support veterans during vulnerable moments after 2024 data showed suicide was the 12th leading cause of death and that Colorado had a higher rate than the national average.  KKCO 11
