- ➤ Bass is a year-and-a-half-old dog from the Grand Rivers Humane Society who spent a year in foster care and is now ready for adoption—he enjoys walks and drives and gets along with other dogs although he would not do well with cats. KJCT

- ➤ The Business Incubator Center announced that downtown Grand Junction will be excluded from the Colorado Enterprise Zone for tax credits after Jan. 1 because new data shows the area no longer meets distress criteria, and local business owners expressed frustration over the decision. Local agencies will hold workshops to help businesses apply for grandfather status by Oct. 15—steps meant to support the local economy. WesternSlopeNow.com

- ➤ Photographer Aaron Patton visited Fruita on September 29 as part of his project 'The Americans' which documents modern American workers across all 50 states; he began his journey 6 months ago in Wichita + he will host local exhibits within the next year as he collects hundreds of portraits for a forthcoming book. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ GMUG has launched The Taylor Canyon Hazard Tree and Fuels Reduction Project to remove dead, damaged, and diseased trees from 188 acres along National Forest Service Road 742 starting on or after September 29th. Crews will work near North Bank Campground for three miles up the canyon to improve roadway safety during wildfires—drivers are asked to reduce speed in work areas. KJCT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Grand Junction City Council met with Mesa County partners on September 29 to review the updated Unhoused Needs Assessment that showed a 100.8% rise in the PIT count to 725 in 2025—up from 361 in 2019—and to devise long-term plans for affordable housing and support services, with the assessment estimating 2,415 unhoused individuals in Mesa County. This session underscored the challenge and the ongoing effort to address the community's needs. KJCT
- ➤ The Forest Service awarded Colorado $26.3 million for wildfire prevention efforts, including $865,009 to a Glenwood Springs project, $2,573,318 to Montezuma County, and $531,308 to Rio Blanco County; the agency will announce another funding opportunity later this year. KKCO 11
- ➤ Seatbelt usage in Colorado reached an all-time high of 90.7% between June 9 and June 22, 2025 after a CDOT survey observed 106,087 vehicles at 744 sites. CDOT officials reported that Mesa, Montrose and Garfield counties recorded rates of 91.64%, 86.77% and 94.3% respectively—reflecting a 2.5% increase from 2024. KJCT
- ➤ Commissioner Bobbie Daniel updated residents at a public hearing last week on Mesa County's efforts to address unfunded state mandates—more than 30 counties have sent letters to Gov. Polis and Mesa County has tracked up to $10 million in annual costs that delay local services. Officials will continue leading state-level discussions to demand equivalent funding for mandates—protecting local budgets remains the priority. Mesa County
