- ➤ The Community Food Bank of Grand Junction opened the 7th St. Community Cafe on Sept. 8 to fight food swamps and add a new funding stream to its operations. The cafe replaced a nearly 20-year-old deli, is staffed by CMU Tech students, and sources ingredients locally—helping the food bank address rising food insecurity in the area. Colorado Public Radio
- ➤ During Fire Prevention Week, local fire officials urge residents to safely handle lithium-ion batteries that power devices—buying only certified products, charging on hard surfaces, and disposing of them responsibly. - ➤ Girls on the Run of Western Colorado is teaming with the No Man’s Land Film Festival to present nine short films of girls pursuing dreams like skiing, climbing and dancing. - ➤ Green Career Week is taking place from October 6 to today in Grand Junction—businesses and organizations offer job shadowing, presentations, and videos that highlight how plants support food, clothing, and air while linking science, art, technology, and sustainability. The Colorado Nursery and Landscape Association is sharing resources and encouraging students to explore one of 147 available careers in the green industry. KJCT
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Colorado Water Trust, a nonprofit with 24 years of experience restoring water to local rivers, returned record amounts this year by moving about 7,000 acre feet into the Yampa River and about 5,000 acre feet into the Colorado River's 15-Mile Reach in Grand Junction—focusing on keeping fish alive while also aiding agriculture and recreation. - ➤ Arna Hoffman was sworn in as Mesa County Treasurer and Public Trustee at the Mesa County Justice Center on Sept. 30—she was appointed after the previous treasurer resigned—and will serve through December 2026. Mesa County

- ➤ Mesa County approved a $366,095 contract with BOA Builders, LLC for the Mesa County Fruita Road and Bridge Building A Addition Project—aimed at bringing all 23 road crew members together from two different facilities—to improve operations and extend equipment life.
