  • HomewardBound announced on Friday morning that its North Avenue Adult Emergency Shelter closed indefinitely because grant cuts and a lack of foundation support forced the shutdown — the shelter, which housed about 140 people nightly, may reopen Monday if new funding is secured.  KKCO 11
  • HomewardBound of the Grand Valley announced that its North Avenue Adult Emergency Shelter closed on weekends starting Friday due to funding cuts — the shelter serves about 150 visitors nightly and hopes to operate seven days a week before winter if it secures additional funding.  WesternSlopeNow.com
  • Grand Valley Catholic Outreach is hosting its 30th Annual Empty Bowls Fundraiser today from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at 245 South First Street in Grand Junction — each $25 ticket includes a handcrafted bowl along with soup and dessert to support its mission of feeding people in need.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
  • The annual Trail of Terror haunted house will open at the Mesa Mall parking lot near Dillards during Halloween and will cover more than 20 themed rooms in a 10,000-square-foot layout, carrying on a local tradition for over 25 years.   • The Mesa County Workforce Center on 512 29 ½ Road hosted the 2025 Fall Job Fair where nearly 50 businesses met with job seekers—hundreds of community members explored new work opportunities while staff provided on-site support throughout the event.  Mesa County

  • The Trails crew is camping on Grand Mesa to repair trails and boost outdoor recreation in Mesa County+ they work to improve local access to the scenic outdoors for residents.  Mesa County

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Colorado drivers are urged by the State Patrol to use the zipper merge method in construction zones and heavy traffic to reduce backups and improve safety. Col. Mathew Packard (chief of the patrol) said waiting to merge until the designated point will ease congestion and lower crash risks.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
  • City of Grand Junction will begin travel restrictions on Oct. 13 as roadwork on Ouray Ave, Linden Ave, and Main St. for holiday lights is scheduled, and crews will guide drivers through needed detours. Non-city projects will also restrict lanes on I-70 Business Loop and close part of 25 Rd for the Xcel Gas Replacements Project + residents should follow posted detour signs and traffic controls.  City of Grand Junction

  • UnitedHealthcare announced it will no longer offer Medicare Advantage Plans in Mesa, Garfield, Moffat and Rio Blanco counties for 2026—leaving fewer choices for seniors and prompting SHIP counselors at the U.S. Bank Building to urge beneficiaries to review their Medicare options during open enrollment from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7.   • Colorado Mesa University mountain bikers won three national titles at Powderhorn when senior Ivan Sippy won two races and senior Makena Kellerman won the short track event, giving the team a strong lead in the USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships.
