- ➤ On October 12, volunteers handed out sack lunches and hot meals outside Homeward Bound as the shelter’s closure left many without shelter during worsening weather. Formerly homeless Allen Franco—who traveled from Gypsum with his mom—helped prepare meals and urged locals to donate warm clothing and food for those in need. KKCO 11
- ➤ Hundreds gathered at Memorial Park in Mesa County Fairgrounds on October 11 for a Charlie Kirk Legacy Rally hosted by Turning Point CMU. The group honored the late Charlie Kirk — who was shot while speaking in Utah — and plans to increase campus events with respectful debate. KKCO 11
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Colorado is seeking nominations for its next poet laureate and is accepting applications until Oct. 27—nominations will be reviewed by a diverse panel before a finalist is recommended to Gov. Polis. The chosen poet will serve as a state ambassador for poetry with a term lasting two years starting in January 2026 and will receive a stipend for public engagements. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Stargazers in Colorado will see the Orionid meteor shower peak October 21 through 26 and Comet Lemon will be visible later this month. Experts advise watching after midnight away from city lights — clear conditions will allow about 10 meteors per hour. KKCO 11

- ➤ Logan Jochim, vice president of Turning Point’s Colorado Mesa University chapter, led a rally Saturday at the Mesa County Fairgrounds to honor founder Charlie Kirk on his one-month anniversary after his murder. - ➤ 1-year-old Scarlett Clarkson is competing for Baby of the Year with a chance to win $25,000 and be featured on Variety magazine—she is currently ranked fourth as voting will end October 16.
