COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mesa County Animal Services in Whitewater will host the Pup-kin Patch event from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 31, offering $60 off dog adoptions and $35 off cat adoptions from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 (adopters will also receive a Halloween-themed toy and a Polaroid family photo).  Mesa County
  • Soundgarden, a handsome brown tabby cat, is available for adoption at Mesa County Animal Services—he arrived as a stray in August, was treated for a stomach issue, and now eats a special grain-free, chicken free diet to stay healthy.  KKCO 11
  • Hope, a 4-year-old Australian cattle dog mix who survived an interstate 70 crash this summer, fully recovered with help from a foster and is now ready for adoption—she does well in homes with cats and may prefer being the only dog in a household.  KKCO 11
  • On Sunday, Grand Valley Horse Rescue received a $2,600 donation that will cover its needs until the end of October—though more funding is needed and the group plans to host its Ride to Meet Santa event after Thanksgiving.  WesternSlopeNow.com

  • Med Lift announced it will soon add taxi services after receiving approval on October 18 to address growing transportation needs in Grand Junction — a recent Facebook poll showed 86% support — as the city’s population nears 72,000.  WesternSlopeNow.com

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Colorado have dropped to an average of $2.85 per gallon, down from $3.19 last year—Grand Junction prices fell from $3.26 to $3.14—AAA said and warned that lower prices might signal broader economic concerns while predicting slight spikes around the holidays.  KKCO 11

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Grand Junction High School's academic teams earned strong results at the Dinosaur Ridge Science Bowl at the Colorado School of Mines on Saturday—the A Team won the state championship and the B Team placed third among 24 teams under longtime coach Coady Shawcroft's guidance. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Mesa County Landfill is using the new Meerkat monitoring system to track harmful gas levels in real time + lower fire and health risks. Operators now collect hundreds of data points every month instead of one.  KKCO 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Yesterday's road report showed clear conditions and low traffic across western Colorado—major routes were easy to navigate. Officials also reported that a 'No Kings' protest took place in Grand Junction and local police later released a statement on the event.  WesternSlopeNow.com
  • Teen Driver Safety Week began on Oct. 20 when Colorado State Patrol reported over 8,000 citations for teen drivers in 2024, with more than 4,000 for speeding (over 2,000 for driving 10 to 19 mph above the limit) and is using social media to share safety tips.  KKCO 11

HEALTH NEWS

  • M.C.I. Foods, Inc. recalled ready-to-eat breakfast burritos and wraps because eggs may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes — the products were sent to schools and other foodservice places and might have reached Mesa County.
