COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Habitat for Humanity of Mesa County hosted a block party on Oct. 17 to mark its growth in affordable homebuilding at its Hoffman Subdivision site in Grand Junction—staff, volunteers and families enjoyed live music and food trucks while the organization reported completing six homes this year and planning eight next year in Clifton and expansion into Delta County. Habitat expects to keep increasing its builds by aiming for up to 12 homes annually to help more families achieve affordable homeownership.  The Business Times
  • United Way and Sunshine Rides have partnered to launch Sunshine Community at 1321 Ute Ave— a nonprofit that helps unhoused locals move from shelters to independent living.   • On Oct. 23, the Grand Junction Kiwanis Club allocated $45,000 to local nonprofits serving children and families, with funds raised at its 57th annual Pancake Day on June 7—supporting groups like Adventure Academy and United Way Book Exchange.  The Business Times
  • The Confluence Center of Colorado will open on Nov. 5 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 2596 Dos Rios Drive in Grand Junction, where visitors can take tours, enjoy refreshments and meet six local nonprofit groups—along with a STREAM preschool that serves community families.  The Business Times
  • The Grand Junction Lions Club honored Debra Rapozo today for founding Collar of Duty, an organization that pairs rescue dogs with veterans to train them as service dogs.   • Moon Farms in Fruita has kept pumpkin prices low for families even as costs have risen, and its new owners have not raised rates since buying the historic farm from the Moon family. The farm will offer a corn maze, petting zoo and Zombie Prom on Halloween night while its pumpkin patch earnings help fund therapy horses at the nonprofit owner—Grand Valley Equine Assisted Learning Center.  KJCT
  • OakStar Bank is open in its new building at 1351 Riverfront Loop near the Colorado River and will hold a grand opening on Nov. 6 from 2 to 5 p.m.—the new space replaces its old downtown office that will close in two months and shows a strong local commitment.  The Business Times
  • Josephine’s Italian Restaurant opened Oct. 14 at 169 S. Mulberry St. in Fruita; owners Jeff Snook and Jody Corey changed a former auto-repair shop—adding a new kitchen and wood-fire oven—to offer Italian food that differs from Fidel’s Cocina—and they ask guests for honest feedback to improve their menu.  The Business Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Museums of Western Colorado invites the community to a cocktail tasting fundraiser called Dinos on the Rocks at Dinosaur Journey Museum in Fruita on Nov. 8 from 6 to 9 p.m. Guests will enjoy tastings from local distilleries and restaurants, a craft cocktail competition, and food truck options — with ticket prices starting at $40 and proceeds supporting the museum.  The Business Times

  • A Grand Junction resident wrote a letter to the editor on October 28 urging voters to re-elect school board members after strong graduation rates and rising test scores boosted school performance. The letter compared current leadership to top companies—arguing that steady board members should continue building on the momentum.  The Business Times
  • Grand Junction candidates Mike Rathbone and Andrea Haitz participated in a three-minute Q&A ahead of Election Day on November 4 — Rathbone, running for the open District C seat, focused on boosting community involvement to ease budget challenges while incumbent board president Haitz stressed maintaining academic gains amid declining enrollment.   • Mesa County Federal Mineral Lease District awarded five grants totaling $348,781 for its 2025 cycle to local projects + the Town of De Beque received $157,799 for engineering work on the De Beque River Park project. Other mini grants included $45,982 for the Motorola XTS replacement project + $45,000 for the Palisade Police K9 program, with $50,000 each for safety upgrades at Caprock Academy and park improvements at Chipeta Elementary.  The Business Times
