Good morning, Grand Junction. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 14th of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Yesterday, a road report posted at 5:19 a.m. MST by Dalen Brazelton covered local traffic updates and road conditions for Grand Junction drivers — the update helped commuters plan their route.  WesternSlopeNow.com
  • Colorado resumed SNAP benefits last Friday so 32,000 families have received aid to help with food needs for the holidays. The Food Bank of the Rockies is preparing for a surge in food pantry clients — with some locations reporting over a 50% rise in demand.  WesternSlopeNow.com
  • November is National Adoption Month and the Colorado Department of Human Services is marking 20 years of the Colorado Heart Gallery by spotlighting four families—one of which kept siblings together—to honor adoptions while nearly 300 children still wait for a forever home. Over 600 adoptions took place in Colorado in 2024, showing the lasting impact of these efforts.  KKCO 11

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Colorado State Patrol warns Grand Junction drivers to slow down during November’s wildlife migration—over 500 collisions occurred last November with mostly property damage, and trooper Mathews said it is safer to hit an animal than to swerve into hazards.  KKCO 11

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Next month, Natural Grocers will move into a new space in the former Sutherlands building (2405 Patterson Road) near Mesa Mall as the 15,539 square foot area is remodeled at an estimated cost of $740,000 by Rogue Architecture for its grand re-opening. The property, once home to a 25-year home improvement business before closing in 2019, is being divided into three separate spaces.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

CULTURE NEWS

  • A documentary by Red Bull showcased Grand Junction native Christa Funk’s journey from Coast Guard service to professional surf photography in Hawaii; the film (First In, Last Out) was shown Thursday at the Avalon Theater and featured her answering audience questions afterward.  KKCO 11
  • Downtown Palisade will host Olde Fashioned Christmas on December 5-6 — featuring a Gingerbread House Contest & Showcase and a season soup challenge by chef Andrew West — inviting local residents to join the holiday celebration.  WesternSlopeNow.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Following a nearly two-week shutdown, the Colorado Department of Human Services restored SNAP benefits so that nearly 11,000 Mesa County residents received their November allocations by the close of business on November 13 — officials warned cardholders to change their PINs as families continued to face financial challenges from the gap.  KJCT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mesa County Public Health warns that one in six people get foodborne illness each year—often caused by viruses, bacteria, or parasites—and advises families preparing for Thanksgiving not to wash poultry to lower the risk of salmonella. Sally Born, the Environmental Health Manager, stressed that proper food storage and frequent hand washing are key to keeping food safe.  KKCO 11
  • Mesa County Public Health inspected local restaurants from Mack to De Beque on November 13 and earlier, finding multiple food safety violations such as inadequate handwashing and improper temperature controls at several sites (while a few establishments had no violations).  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
