- ➤ Friends of Youth and Nature named Abram Herman as its first part-time executive director on Nov. 10 to guide the shift from volunteer-only to paid staffing while expanding outdoor programs and partnerships across nearby counties. - ➤ Toys for Tots Mesa County is helping 600 local families this holiday season by sorting donated gifts for children, with a Stuff The Bearcat toy drive scheduled Sunday, Dec. 7 at Mesa Mall from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and toy distribution set for Dec. 12 and 13. KKCO 11
- ➤ Local Boy Scouts are selling live Christmas trees in seasonal lots to raise funds for troop activities (including summer camps and trips). Three tree sales remain open in Grand Junction through mid-December with set hours. Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

- ➤ Cleanup continues after a Union Pacific train derailed into the Gunnison River near Whitewater on Dec. 3 when rockfall and a boulder blocked the tracks (with two engineers rescued safely) as hazmat and mechanical teams work to contain spilled fuel and coal. KKCO 11

- ➤ Colorado West Ballet will stage its Nutcracker at Colorado Mesa University's Asteria Theatre from Dec. 18 to Dec. 23. The production features three rotating casts — each with new costumes that offer a fresh twist on this cherished tradition. KKCO 11
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Nationwide, electricity prices are rising as aging power grids, extreme weather & rising fuel costs push rates from $121 to $156 a month, according to NEADA. Grand Junction households should prepare for potential bill increases as winter approaches. Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
- ➤ A federal grant for rural broadband is funding over $3 million to ClearNetworx to expand fiber to 200 rural addresses around Palisade and Fruita. The work will span two to three years — part of the BEAD program to improve high-speed internet in rural Mesa County. Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
