COMMUNITY NEWS

  • VFW Post 1247 in Grand Junction is set to remain closed for the rest of the year with plans to partially reopen in early 2026 as repairs and training address IRS paperwork, bylaw violations, and a collapsed ceiling in its bar area (the rental hall may open early next year).  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
  • Quill, a dog covered in porcupine quills upon arrival at the Roice-Hurst Humane Society, is available for adoption today; adoption fees are ($50) until Dec. 14 during the Bissel Pet Foundation Holiday Hope Special (supporting Jake’s Fund for vet care).  KJCT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • LO Nails reopened at Mesa Mall on Oct. 10 at 304 North Ave (Unit 2B) and offers seven nail and pedicure stations with English and Spanish-speaking technicians. Locally owned by Liz Ochoa, the salon now enjoys increased foot traffic and plans to expand its team.  The Business Times
  • CanvaScape reopened at 455 Main St after a 15-month hiatus and now offers custom prints on canvas, metal, and stone that capture personal memories. Owner Ray Kinnick expects the downtown location to attract visitors at Main Street events and boost holiday shop visits this December.  The Business Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Grand Junction will host a Greek Christmas Marketplace on Dec. 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Guests can pre-order and pick up pastries, gyros, and gifts at 3585 N. 12th St. (Horizon Drive roundabout) and tour the church.  The Business Times
  • Local former stuntman and artist Vaughn Shafer set a record of 82.4 mph on a custom skateboard at Western Colorado Dragway, inspiring duo Brett Buescher + Nick Costello to produce the award-winning documentary 'Driven By Angels.' ECONOMY NEWS

  • Grand Junction Economic Partnership Executive Director Curtis Englehart earned a national Certified Economic Developer designation from the International Economic Development Council to boost his economic development skills. He said the milestone will help attract quality jobs and investment in Mesa County.  The Business Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • BridgeCare, a database from Mesa County Partnership for Children and Families, has powered over 1,500 childcare searches this year to help working families find local care. Employers are encouraged to share the tool with staff, boosting workforce stability (using key search data).  The Business Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fire managers with the Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit will burn slash piles in Mesa County through April 2026 to lower wildfire risk; smoke may be visible during and after burns when weather is ideal (locations include farms near Whitewater, Glade Park, Mack, Gateway, and Grand Junction).  The Business Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Grand Junction will release $185,000 from unspent shelter funds to help HomewardBound keep its shelters open through February. Mesa County will add $30,000 while city leaders plan additional support for consolidating operations at the Pathways family shelter (unspent funds were returned due to unmet documentation requirements).  The Business Times
  • Mesa County Public Health announced that Xavier Crockett will step down as executive director on Dec. 31 due to personal reasons while serving as a special advisor through mid-2026, and Erin Minnerath, deputy director since Apr. 2024, is named interim executive director effective Jan. 1.  The Business Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • Community Hospital named Glenn Williams as its new chief financial officer; he will begin his role Jan. 5 and brings over 23 years of healthcare finance expertise (including leadership roles in military and corporate settings) to guide the hospital’s financial strategy.  The Business Times

SPORTS NEWS

  • Grand Junction mountain biking coach John Klish won bronze at the Deaflympics in Japan last month, earning his sixth medal as he navigated a technical race course that recalled local trails — a finish achieved despite his 90 dB hearing loss.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
