COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local residents are encouraged to build emergency preparedness by connecting with neighbors, sharing contact details, and setting a safe meeting place (a step that includes mapping out multiple evacuation routes) to stay ready when emergencies occur.  Mesa County
  • The Gift of Love nonprofit is seeking a larger location that offers separate rooms for care package assembly, food distribution, and a coffee shop (Cup of Love) to boost donations and volunteer efforts in the community; the organization distributed over 7,000 care packages last year.  KJCT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local Jewish communities on the Western Slope are holding Hanukkah celebrations this week with security in Montrose+Durango+Crested Butte+Telluride after a deadly Sydney attack. Local rabbis advise lighting the menorah boldly as a response to fear.  KJCT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The District 51 Foundation awarded $10,000 in grants to eight school employees—selected from about 30 applications—to purchase Aquos boards, sound systems and lab equipment to boost classroom technology and innovation.  KKCO 11

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Colorado's new recycling program will start in June 2026 and shift packaging recycling costs from residents and local governments to companies. The CDPHE-approved program (signed into law in 2022) will offer free recycling services where available and expand access to underserved areas.  KKCO 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • During the holidays, Mesa County promotes its Colorado Works program (TANF) to offer temporary cash and support to pregnant women and families with children who meet eligibility requirements; applications are accepted at the county Human Services Department, Workforce Center, or online.  KJCT
  • Mesa County celebrated finishing the long-planned US 6 Clifton Improvements Project this month. The redesigned corridor now features modern roundabouts and upgraded pedestrian connections that slow traffic and enhance safety for drivers, walkers and bikers in Clifton.  Mesa County

SPORTS NEWS

  • Colorado Mesa University presented a revised athletic complex proposal to the Grand Junction City Council on Monday, Dec. 15 that preserves the Lincoln Park Barn's exterior while renovating its interior for a new football facility. The city and university are continuing discussions to reach a win-win agreement.  KKCO 11
